Tagged: butter substitute, Sweeteners
I recently joined Trim Down Club, and have read that real butter and sugar are preferable to margarines and substitutes; which I’m tending to agree that the real thing is preferable in most all categories. However, we’ve been using Splenda and Smart Balance spreads and sticks, and just wonder what the consensus on these are.
Thanks!
Hi, dmschaefer, and welcome!
Splenda is not one of the recommended sweeteners in this program. It is artificial , and unfortunately, research has shown that it ultimately may cause weight gain and raise risk factors for related disorders.
Alternatives include Stevia and monk fruit (i.e. Nectresse) for no-cal; xylitol has 2/3 the calories of sugar, but no carbs or aftertaste or carbs.
Smart Balance is OK, but try to find the type high in omega-3s or an organic alternative.
