MemberOssie: I was considering doing juicing of vegetables and fruits for my next week’s menu plan (I mean, just juice and nothing else, just to detox completely.) I wanted to know what the TDC thinks of this. I feel that it could benefit me. Please let me know what the TDC has to say about this sort of thing on a once, maybe, every 6 months or so thing. Thanks, Kathy

MemberHi, Kathy. Is there a specific reason for the fast? Note that the Trim Down Club program is intended to be a type of detoxification program, which enables you to elminiate toxins without slowing down your metabolism. Though we don’t generally recommend anything resembling fasting or significant curbing of intake (because if carried too long, it can result in rebound weight gain), high-quality juice fasts for up to 2-3 days (along with elimination of toxins, including smoke, alcohol, and chemicals) can be beneficial, depending on the body’s condition. I would suggest consulting with an alternative healthcare practitioner regarding your cleansing needs and how to get maximum benefits. If you continue with the Trim Down Club program and do not smoke or engage in excessive alcohol intake you may not need to engage in such fasts with as high a frequency as every 6 months.

MemberOssie: I guess I was forgetting the fact that it would probably slow down my metabolism (and I don’t really want to do that) but I was looking for something to do to stop the bloating and gas I’ve been having. If you think it wouldn’t slow my metabolism down too much to do it for 3 days, I might just do that. I know I need to get on a regular exercise regime as I’m sure that is part of the reason for my slow weight loss. I’ve been on this for 17 weeks and only lost 13 lb. A couple weeks ago I felt good about it but I guess I’m feeling a little down about it now.
What got me thinking about the juicing was a couple of movies I watched: 1. Fat, Sick, and Almost Dead and 2. The Gersen Miracle. Have you seen them? Interesting. Appreciate your comments. Kathy

MemberHi, Kathy. First, congratulations on losing 13 pounds. The rate at which you are losing is exactly the rate that is healthy for your body and may help ensure that it stays off. The gas and bloating may be related to some issues that can be resolved through means parallel to your efforts here. It may mean trial elimination of certain foods to which you may have an intolerance.
First – when did the problem start? Is it better or worse at certain times of the day? And of course, is it different after eating certain foods or drinking certain beverages?June 2, 2013 at 2:13 am #12170pasjj5
MemberOssie, I will report back to you on this matter after I have given your questions some more thought and figuring out. I do believe what you have said regarding the metabolism. I just need to keep reminding myself about it all the time. I don’t think I’ll be doing the juicing only days; I will, however, try to fit more juicing in on my daily meal planning. Thank you, Kathy

MemberOssie: This past weekend I have been thinking over things regarding the bloating and gas I’ve had. It has been off and on throughout my 18 weeks now on the program. But I did notice something this past Friday and Saturday after going shopping. We have a new Coop in our area in NH and I started shopping there these past two weeks. I bought a 16 oz. bottle of GT’s Kombucha drink which I drank half Friday eve. and the other half Saturday. The drink seemed to clean me out good and I had no bloating or gas and haven’t since then (being Mon. today.) I used to buy this in past years until the shop I used to get it at moved too far away. I love this drink (only 30 calories per 8 oz., 0 fat, 10mg sodium, 7g Carbs, 2g sugar, 0 protein; 25% folate, 20% of each B1, B2, B3, B6, B12– probiotic organisms: bacillus coagulans GBI 1 billion, S. Boulardii 1 billion; EGCG 100mg, acetic acid 30mg, gluconic acid 10mg, lactid acid 25mg. and the Ingredients read: 100% G.T.’s organic raw kombucha and fresh pressed ginger juice.) Could this also be added to the menu list and/or is it ok to just have 8 oz. per day without it being added to the menu planner? Or do i need to exchange this for something on my daily menu? Thanks for your research. Kathy

MemberHi, Kathy. Kombucha is excellent. It is actually considered a tea and so is “free” in the program.

MemberOssie: Thanks so much. I will be purchasing 4 bottles of the ready made Kombucha each week when I go shopping (1/2 bottle a day.) It cost $3.49 a bottle here in NH, but it is so good. I’d love to try making my own Kombucha; its just a matter of sending away for the mushroom starter. There are many recipes out there plus I have the Nourishing Traditions book by Sally Fallon that has an excellent recipe in it. Kathy

MemberI find this topic quite interesting because close friends of mine have been promoting the benefits of juicing. Like you Kathy, I’ve seen those videos and have been really curious, although my common sense says long term juicing cannot be all good. I do agree the occasional detox will be beneficial but worry about the weight gain as Ossie said. So I’ve decided to do a small detox to kickstart then go back to my eating plan…will keep an eye on this subject in future posts.
