I’ve been following the menu since Jan 1st – weight loss worked well and lost about 26kg. however, been on maintenance menus for a couple of months or so and obviously lacking something as my hair is very, very dry and thin now – whereas it was very thick and in good health before I started the diet. Any ideas to improve the situation? I thought that I would have a balanced diet by following the menus.

Hi, solo2453. A few things. First, I would recommend that you see a health care professional about the condition. He/she may indeed opt to check you for a nutritional deficiency. It should be noted that many things can cause hair loss, including stress (even positive stress), hormonal changes, and allergies.
Second, I would be happy to run some calculations for you. I just need a few details: gender, age, height, weight, physical activity level, and a sample day from your daily menus (copy and paste), as well as how closely you follow the menus and how much and what you drink every day.
As you stated, the menus here are indeed intended to be balanced, and follow recommendations set by governmental bodies. I will compare your menu to your needs and get back to you here.

Hi Ossie, thanks for the speedy response! 🙂 I’m 49, 176cm tall, current weight is 74kg, I play squash 3-4 times a week, dinghy sailing twice a week, walk for about 2 hours a week and do a small amount of cycling. Exercise each morning for about 15 minutes (plank etc.) I follow the menus very closely, usually eating more than is suggested. Also have a glass of grape juice with dinner, drink about 3 litres of water each day. Green tea, black coffee and Chai.
    This was Monday’s Menu:
    Breakfast
1 cup of Raw Granola with Milk
    1 cup of Blueberry
    Snack #1
    1 slice of SWG Bread
    1 Egg (omega-3)
    1 Pear
    Lunch
    5 Olives
    1 cup of Miso Soup
    3 ounces of Turkey (White)
    1/2 cup of Millet (Cooked)
2 servings of Vegetables of Your Choice
    Snack #2
1 ounce of Chocolate (high % cocoa)
    Dinner
    2 slices of SWG Bread
1 ounce of Tuna, Canned in Water
    1 cup of Edamame
    1 tsp of Olive Oil
    Snack #3
    1 ounce of Almonds

    and that’s what I had…

Hi, Steve. I ran an analysis, and most of the nutrients are in good shape, with the moderate exception of calcium – you’re getting about 80% of what is recommended. Though calcium insufficiency has not been linked to hair loss, it may help to swap some of the protein foods you normally eat for dairy – especially dairy fortified with vitamin D (more linked to hair health).
Since there does not appear to be a nutritional reason from the nutrient content of the diet, my next question would be if you have introduced any new foods to which you may be allergic.
In any event, I would suggest that you consult with a health care professional who can order blood nutrient tests, including at least zinc, vitamin B12, vitamin D, and albumin.

    Thanks Ossie,
I’ll try that and see if there’s any improvement. Apart from the hair, I’m feeling pretty good!
    All the best,
    Steve
