    Hi,
I want to substitute a protein shake for a meal. I’ve written this in my menu, but don’t know where to find if I received an answer. Can I get help on this question here in the forums? The shake that I use consists of skim milk/almond milk, cut-up strawberries, and the protein powder (the name on the outside is “Aria”)
    Thank you

Hi, Marilyn. I would be happy to run some calculations for you. I just need the exact recipe of the shake, including the amounts, as well as your height, weight, age, and general activity level.
In general, we prefer whole protein sources instead of powders. Note that with the right food blend in the shake, and given that the rest of the menu is quite high in protein, you probably don’t need the powder.
However, if you really like supplements, then we would recommend less processed types without fructose (which is not ideal for weight loss). Examples of products better geared toward health improvement would include Tera (http://www.teraswhey.com/our-products/organic-whey-en.html) which is the simplest product, Garden of Life Raw http://www.gardenoflife.com/Products-for-Life/Foundational-Nutrition/RAW-Protein.aspx, or even Healthforce http://healthforce.com/warrior-force/warrior-food-extreme-vanilla-plus.
Again, if you post some information (as above), I can run some calculations for you.

    Hi Ossie,

My shake consists of 3 large strawberries, about 5 oz. skim milk, about 5oz almond milk (original)and the protein powder (Designer Protein Blend which is soy protein isolate, whey protein concentrate, whey protein isolate, isomalto-oligosaccharides, fructose, oat fiber, natural vanilla flavor, calcium phosphate, brown rice syrup, soy lecithin, citrus fiber, soy isoflavones, stevia leaf extract, mixed tocopherols to help protect flavor, vitamin D3 (cholecalcferol), folate). 2 level scoops powder (22g) contain 90 calories, 1 g total fat, 20 mg cholesterol, 90 mg sodium, 50mg potassium, 6g total carbs, 3g dietary fiber, 3g sugars, 14 g protein.
I have no problem using a different drink, I just find it easy to drink a shake and not make a meal.
I appreciate that you will take a look at this one, and let me know if I should change to another one or modify this one. Thank you.

    Hi,
I’m requesting that you view the information on the drink that I’m using, and wonder if you could let me know what your calculations reveal.
As stated in my last post, I listed the ingredients and the makeup. I would like to start on a shake of some kind as a substitute for a meal – this is a very convenient way for me to get in a snack/meal after working out and before work.
    Thank you.

Hi, Marilyn. Substituting for a meal with a shake is fine – especially if it makes it all more convenient.
We would suggest a different shake, as there are quite a few processed ingredients in there, as well as isolated fructose, which can work against your health goals here. Examples of more natural types are here: http://www.teraswhey.com/, http://www.gardenoflife.com/Products-for-Life/Foundational-Nutrition/RAW-Protein.aspx. You don’t have to use these specific products, just note the types of ingredients we encourage.
With regard to the recipe, it seems a little light. I would suggest to add more fruit – to a total of at least 3/4-1 cup (120-150 g), and a source of good fats, such as ground flaxseed (1-2 tablespoons).

Thank you very much. I will follow your instructions and add more fruit and flax seed, plus pay attention to the ingredients. I certainly appreciate this information very much.

My protein morning shake is almond/coconut unsweetened milk, 1/2 banana, sometimes I add: walnuts, blueberries, strawberries, and flax seed (which can cause loose bowels)

One of my morning shakes I enjoy and it fills me up. It consists of 1 apple with skin, cored, 5 almonds, 1/2 cup plain yogurt, 1/2 banana, I use organic fat free milk or almond milk they both are good and I do add some strawberries sometimes in there, some ice. Delicious!!!!!!

Ossie, Can we have that many fruits all at once? On one day? if so, is that the only fruit you canhave all day?

    #16061

Hi, Deborah. The total amount of fruits for the day in your menu is fine – not all at once of course, but spread out as in your menu. You can add a piece of fruit to meals where there isn’t any – especially if you are not a diabetic and don’t have high blood triglycerides – just keep in mind that it adds to your daily total of everything.

The reason I asked was because they were talking about shakes in the ,orning instead of a meal. I didn’t think we could do that!

    Hi there,

I’m wondering if there are any general protein shake recipes in particular that you would recommend?

    Thank-you!

Hi, Natalie. You can see our shake recipes here: http://www.trimdownclub.com/?s=shake&post_type=recipe. Anything with added dairy or will be a source of protein – you can substitute with organic soy if you wish.

Hi, I made my own shake for lunch today, I used 6 oz of Fage 0% Greek yogurt, 1/2 cup frozen strawberry slices, 1/2 cup frozen chopped spinach, 1/3 cup unsweetened almond milk, 1 tsp Domino Light which is a blend of stevia and sugar. I would like to know if this is a healthy choice.

Sharon, could you please analyse the following and offer your opinion.
I just started using protein powder and chose gold standard 100% whey. In my shake i use 4 oz orange juice, 4 oz filtered or distilled water, 1 tsp bee pollen, 1/2 banana, 1/2 teaspoon chia seeds, 1 tsp of udo’s oil, 1 rounded scoop of powder and 5 ice cubes! I am 6 ft and 190 lbs and I workout about 2 1/2 a day! This shake is consumed about 1/2 hr after my workout which is from 8 am to 10:30 am or so.
    Thanks
