MemberOssie can you explain to me if gluten id the part of the grain that turns to sugar in the blood stream. is this the reason docs want diabetics to go gluten free? and the reSON IT BALANCES out? JUST WONDERED IF i;d been told correctly.. and i didn’t want to make a gluten free cake for diabetic friend and it make him sick. can a glutenQa free . Lou

MemberGood grief! I must have been very sleepy when I wrote that question.I wish I could delete it! I was asking if gluten is the part of the grain that turns to sugar in your blood? Is this the reason doctors want diabetics to go gluten free? I was wondering if had been told correctly. I didn’t want to make a gluten free,sugar free cake for my diabetic friend and make him sick! MemberHi, Deborah. No, gluten is not the main component of bread that raises blood sugar, but rather the carbohydrates other than the fiber. Type 2 diabetics who do not have celiac disease may benefit from a gluten-free diet if they are “sensitive” to it and so there is a chance that the gluten is causing systemic inflammation, which then makes the diabetes harder to manage. However, the diabetes-gluten connection to which some doctors may be referring is based on the glycemic index of grains in general and especially wheat bread, and is not necessarily for everyone – and it definitely does not have solid scientific backing.

MemberI struggle with gluten-free options all the time. I’m glad this diet plan includes recipes that sound good. I haven’t actually tried them yet. I started this on Jan 1st (yesterday). Appreciate reading about tips.

MemberThanks , Ossie , I’m glad to get that straight. So because I have fibromyalgia, the doctor may have suggested it for me to lower inflammation. ???

MemberHi, Deborah. It could be. However, it would only do this if you are sensitive to gluten. Try it if you wish, and see how you feel. If it does not make a difference, I would recommend not restricting yourself.
