Ossie-SharonMemberHi, Kathrynh. Hopefully you are being followed by a healthcare provider who is familiar with your case. Ulcerative colitis is often sensitive to very individual things, and you may notice some quirks along the way. Basically, there are two phases: maintenance and flares. At both stages, probiotics, omega-3 fatty acids, and turmeric (the yellow spice in curry) seem to be very important, while irritating substances such as caffeine (in coffee and tea) and related substances and sugar (as in chocolate) should be avoided, along with alcohol. Some people have had luck avoiding dairy and wheat, as well as fatty meats and fatty sauces. Very fibrous vegetables (such as broccoli and onions) should be chopped into small pieces before eating.
During a flare it is recommended to avoid high-fiber and/or gas-forming foods and beverages such as legumes, cabbage, and soda, as well as foods with small seeds and kernels, such as sesame, nuts (unless ground into flour or butter), corn, strawberries, pomegranates, and popcorn.April 5, 2014 at 2:40 pm #19071
debramelnickMemberAlso, you can check out the SCD Diet. The Single Carbohydrate Diet which has been proven to heal ulcerative colitis without such severe restrictions on healthy diet items. It seems to suggest that complex carbohydrates which are available mostly in highly processed foods are the culprit. Not gluten in the wheat so much as the fact that the highly processed foods create very complex carbs that the body cannot metabolize.
