I am new, just signed up today. I have to be honest, I am hoping this can solve some of my confusion issues with my diet. I used to think I was a healthy eater because I don’t really eat sweets at all, except the occasional ice cream, and I eat of lot of fruits and vegetables. Although I definitely need to eat more often. I turned 35 a month ago, a single mom with a business and I really want to just lose this weight I have gained over the last two years.
Anyways, I found out I have a hypothyroid 2 years ago, and even with regular medication checks, I am still not losing any of the gained weight. I have been working out a minimum of 4 days a week and still nothing (I even hired a personal trainer now). I have heard the phrase “its 80% what you put in your mouth”, so I decided to go online to see about the right kind of diet for someone with a hypothyroid. I am still overwhelmed with what I can and cannot have. Many cites say to go “gluten free”. I am hoping one of the nutritionists on this cite can help me with that. Should I go “gluten-free” simply because I have a hypothyroid? I worry that buying “gluten-free” items from the store is then going against the idea of staying away from processed foods. Which is the worst of the two evils, gluten or processed? Do you have any other tips for those of us with a hypothyroid, or does having a hypothyroid not change the suggested healthy diet at all?

Ossie-SharonMemberHi, Deanne. Gluten is only “evil” if you are sensitive to it, which is not everyone. There is no question that processed foods play a bigger role. Regarding hypothyroid, the following foods (called “goitrogens”) are recommended to be cooked or eaten in moderation in your case:
Vegetables – should be cooked (and not consumed in large quantities)
-Spinach
-Broccoli
-Brussels sprouts
-Cabbage
-Cauliflower
-Collard greens
-Kale
-Mustard greens
-Turnips
-Rutabaga
-Sweet potatoesOther foods – to be eaten in moderation
-Soy
-Flaxseed
-Pine nuts
-Peanuts
-Radishes
-Peaches
-Pears

DeanneddMemberThank you so much for this response! I have been trying to go Gluten Free, and although it is not as hard as I thought, I haven’t noticed a huge difference. What are some of the signs that would tell me I am “sensitive” to Gluten? I am assuming weight isn’t one of them?

Ossie-SharonMemberHi, Deanne. Signs of gluten intolerance include bloating and a foggy feeling and/or dizziness after eating it, as well as constipation; in more serious cases, there would be intestinal bleeding and loose stools, and even an autoimmune disease such as one of the thyroid disorders. If you are concerned the latter could be related in your case, I would suggest consulting with a physician and getting a gluten sensitivity test, i.e. through Nutrigenomix.

TammypMember20years ago I was diagnosed with Graves Disease. Hyperthyroidism. This was not able to be treated with medication and I finally had my thyroid removed with Radioactive Iodine. Looking back, not the right thing to do. I am now 46 and I keep gaining weight every month. The doctors always say “Oh you are in the satisfactory range”
Now as I read comments on this topic regarding the foods I should eat is nearly making me cry. I have been having a pear, apple and broccoli, chai seeds, almond and flax seed juice that I make for breakfast and that carries me into lunch….As I read this I could not believe for 8 weeks I a may be eating the wrong foods considering I have no thyroid.July 16, 2014 at 1:03 pm #21704
Ossie-SharonMemberHi, Tammy. No regrets! Sometimes nutritional care is trial-and-error, so in this case, you have something against which you can compare. That is very valuable.
