Serving size: 1 cup / 240 ml
Exchanges per Serving: 2 Carb, 0 Protein, 0 Fat
In the menu it says to serve 2 cups of the cooked steel cut oats. That seems more than I can eat. It is very good!
How are you getting the carbs? Banana and these Steel Oats have a lot of carbs.
Hi, Jess0711. What you are seeing at the bottom of the recipe are “exchanges,” not grams. The approximate translation to grams for the various exchanges is as follows:
1 carbohydrate exchange = 15 grams of carbohydrates + up to 3 grams of protein
1 protein exchange = 7 grams of protein + up to 5 grams of fat
1 fat exchange = 5 grams of fat
1 fruit exchange = 15 grams of carbohydrates
1 vegetable exchange = 5 grams of carbohydrates + up to 2 grams of protein
1 sweet exchange = up to 15 grams of carbohydrates + up to 5 grams of fat
1 free exchange = up to 5 grams of carbohydrates or up to 2 grams of protein or fat
They follow the exchange systems of dietetics and diabetes organizations around the world.
Are these recipes good for diabetics too?
Hi, lbarnett. Absolutely! Note that the exchanges are based on the system used by diabetics organizations.
I will definitely be doing these as overnight oats. Has anyone tried that before?
If you make it freeze it in portions what is the best way to reheat for enjoying?
Hi, renellp04. Microwaving is the most reliable way to heat it up.
I have only just joined and have been reading various posts to pick up any tips from others, I dont understand what is meant by swapping/substituting proteins for fats etc. can you please direct me to where on your website I can learn more.Thank you.
Hi, Elizabeth, and welcome. For each meal, you have a certain number of exchanges for major food groups – you can see these by clicking on “Exchange mode” in the toolbar above any of your menus. There are two ways to swap for these:
1. Click on the food you want to change, and you will see a pop-up menu from which you can select the replacement
2. Refer to the following list of exchanges, and make the swap without modifying your online menu: http://www.trimdownclub.com/exchanges-lists.
Hi, Sharon. This makes 4 servings. You can freeze unused portions, or just make 1/4 the recipe for a single serving, using this guide: http://www.trimdownclub.com/reducing-the-size-of-recipes.
HI, I would love to get a replay from some like yourself no one has yet been in contacted with me since I have joined last Saturday what is monk fruit? thanls
Hi, katbuc10. Monk fruit is a natural no-carb sweetener also known as lo han guo. You can read more about it here: http://www.naturallygreen.co.uk/Natural-Sweeteners/Luo-Han-Guo.
What if I can’t find Monk Fruit sweetener as I have never heard of it, is there something else I could use.
Hi, foggysunshine. Good alternatives include Stevia, erythritol, and combinations of those two.
Does this make more than 1 serving? If so when can rest be used?
I like this breakfast meal for every day
Hi, Carlosvanity. Absolutely 🙂
Can u cook on stove top?
Hi, inaw. The are natural high-sweeteness sweeteners from herbs. You can read more about them here: http://www.trimdownclub.com/the-best-way-to-sweeten-your-tea.
Hi, mandermari. Any fruit will do, even simply more strawberries.
I’m allergic to bananas. Is there a replacement.
hi please can you tell me what stevia is or monk fruit powderis
Hi, nyra. I’m happy to help. What area is confusing?
I’m confused?
Hi, Durkin. Yes, we recommend steel-cut oats. Your milk is fine.
is oats steel cut oatmeal? and i use milk 2%
Hi, AnnieAlmond. Try covering the bowl lightly while microwaving.
I cooked this in the microwave on high for 10 minutes as stated but it didn’t cook at all, very liquify and hard. Any suggestions
This is a easy recipes to follow
Hi, Helene. The recipe is for 4 servings.

Hi, tmhauser. You can find them at health-oriented stores such as Whole Foods Market and Trader Joe’s, as well as online at Amazon.
Best grocery stores to buy these foods???
Thanks for your prompt reply. After reading the article I think I will use organic honey.
Please help – what are oats steel cut and what is stevia syrup? Where can I buy them?
Thanks
i KNOW i WOULD LIKE THIS PORTION.

Hi, lomagnew. Almond milk would be a fine substitute for dairy here.
Hi, Sue. They are both natural non-caloric sweeteners. You can read more about them in our article here – http://www.trimdownclub.com/the-best-way-to-sweeten-your-tea-2/ – and get them in New Zealand in health-oriented shops as well as online – for example, http://www.healthpost.co.nz/superfoods-and-organic/healthy-food/natural-sweeteners?_ga=1.209206998.517057637.1420515124 and http://www.biovittoria.com/.
I can’t drink milk. I now use Almond Milk. Can I use this?
What is stevia? or monk fruit powder? I live in New Zealand and have never heard of these ingredients!
Hi, RachelApril. Raw whole fat milk is fine here (especially if the cow was pasture-fed and raised organically). Powdered milk is less recommended, as it may contain oxidized particles that can work against your goals here.
Can we use raw whole fat milk or powdered milk?
Hi, CatharineKnight. Try monk fruit sweetener – it has much less of an aftertaste, and you can use the same amount as Stevia. If you are making something like this recipe, you can also use an inulin-based sweetener like JustLikeSugar, which is used more like sugar.
Stevia tastes revolting!
Hi, CarmelM. Absolutely.
Can u put tsp honey natural local honey instead of sweetner.?
Hi, rocky76. The recipes suggest monk fruit sweetener as an alternative. No worries 🙂
A lot of the recipes call for stevia and I am allergic to it
I’ll try this
Looks like something I will try.
Hi, BronxMama. Puffins are great. 1/2 cup is a carb exchange.
Ossie – If I don’t have the oats, can I use Puffin Cereal (got it at Trader Joe’s). It is also easier for me to digest, and filling also, and I could eat it raw or cooked. Thanks.
I use Truvia. It comes from the Stevia plant which is an herb. Tastes like sugar with no after taste. No additives listed on the package and in Canada, EVERYTHING has to be listed on the labels as well as Nutrition facts.
Hi Bevhilliker, we have Truvia in England it has Stevia in it but also other things as it is the supermarket’s own sweetener I was told. I believe Stevia and monk fruit sweetener are more pure probably. I eat my oats and fruit without sweetener as the milk adds sweetness and it’s very tasty like that! Hope that helps.
Please help sorry for sounding thick
Where can I buy
Steel cut oats xxxx
Hi, Sallyann. You can find them at any supermarket – note that they may be labeled as “whole” oats.
How about a smoothie (per serving) of 1/2 c 1% milk, 1/4 c frozen blueberries, 1/4 c raw oatmeal, 1/2 banana, dash of vanilla?
Hi, CarolAlbert. Eating it raw is fine.
Hi, jllackey. Bananas are not a no-no, but they are higher in sugar than other fruits – so note that 1/2 is considered a fruit exchange, rather than the whole thing.
Hi, selasi. You of course can add any fruit or nuts to this. Regarding sweeteners, see the link I posted below for an article that may help make good choices.
Hi, darlahunter. You are right, that non-quick-cooking oats absolutely are best. This recipe was posted in response to members who wanted a fast breakfast alternative that did not require a lot of cooking. It is still better than pre-packaged cereals, but if you have the time, steel-cut oats are definitely the way to go!
Hi to all asking about sweeteners. The article at this link is a good resource to answer your questions: http://www.trimdownclub.com/the-best-way-to-sweeten-your-tea-2/.
Hi, Kathy. First, the 4-1/2 here refers to exchanges, and each fat exchange is 5 grams of fat. Yes, the amount of fat definitely varies in milks – there is a very wide range in vegan milks to nearly none in rice milk to a very high amount in some coconut milks.
I don’t eat oatmeal unless
I don’t eat oatmeal unless I can eat uncooked . Will it work to mix just the oats, bananas and strawberries to eat that way?
i can eat
I thought you said bananas were on of the 5 no no’s and not to eat them?
For those in the UK, I have just found that Tesco’s sell Canderel Green Stevia – both tablets and granulated. From what I have just found out, with the ingredients they use it shouldn’t have a bitter aftertaste. Worth checking out.
My breakfast in the mornings is a portion of any rolled oats with half a portion of no added sugar muesli and a little milk. Lovely!
I had this for breakfast, but I used steel oats, walnuts too, a little Chia seeds and it was wonderful. I used stevia for sweetner. Ummmmm.
This is my first encounter with this exciting diet or should I say Life style, and I was late this am
so I made the Oatmeal Banana Strawberry and I loved it for my lunch.
I am amazed you are using quick-cooking oats. Am I missing something?
I always have porridge for breakfast microwaved for 3 mins with mixed fruit and honey. Can I continue on having this.?
can i add anything to it
What is Stevia syrup
Can I use honey or maple syrup for sweetener
Can I substitute agave nectar for the stevia?
41/2 grams of fat? where is this coming from, I don,t buy vagan milk is that where the fat is? I use almond milk or coconut-3.5 on the almond an 14 in undiluted coconut canned! Can the fat be varied by just the milk?
Hi, SandyGram. Nutritional analyses will be available in the future. In the meantime, I can tell you that each cup yields about 31 grams of carbohydrates, 8-1/2 grams of protein, and 4-1/2 grams of fat.
What is stevia syrup?
So far this is great but it would be even more great if each recipe had nutritional value per serving. Something to think about…thank you
Hi, LindaWilliams. The whole grain version of Cream of Wheat is fine.
I am on a low sodiun diet, so I skipped the salt. I also did have the sweetener, so I left it out. Very fast to prepare and tasty.
I limit myself to RICE MILK and COCONUT MILK since I am allergic to all forms of cow’s milk. Trusting that it will have to do.
would cream of wheat or rice be allowed? I prefer it over oatmeal which is so lumpy
Hi everybody, Really found your responses a help. Living in the UK I have found finding some of the ingredients a challenge. I found Stevia at Holland & Barrett but now knowing it is a sweetener I would rather use fresh fruit on my Oats. Can anyone tell me what Brand of Oats they use?
how many servings does this make?
Stevia is a sweetener from a plant. I live in S. Florida and have one growing in my herb garden. If you eat a leaf it has the most unbelievable sweet taste, I use the leaf occasionally! When shopping for Stevia be sure to look at the ingredients, most brands have added sugar substitutes, like dextrose, glucose, etc. As for the aftertaste, you really can get used to anything. I hated it originally in my tea, but now regular sugar or splenda(tm) are just too sweet. After I was diagnosed with breast cancer I cut out everything but stevia, research shows that is it believed that sugar feeds cancer cells.
Regarding the cup of water: it is added to the milk to cook the oats.
Steel cut oats absolutely can be used in this recipe.
You can use Stevia powder interchangeably with syrup or liquid – teaspoon for teaspoon, and 1 teaspoon powder = 30 drops liquid or syrup.
Rice yeast is free
It is preferred that artificial sweeteners like saccharin (i.e., Sweet N’Low) are not used. If you are sensitive to sugar alcohols and don’t want Stevia, it is best to go with coconut sugar.
I agree that Stevia has unpalatable artificial sweetener aftertaste. A better alternative is Xylitol – ‘derived from non allergenic corn cob (core) – if you have a sweet tooth – http://www.nirvanahealthproducts.com. Immeasurably more palatable!
I am highly sensitive to sorbitol or anything ending in itol is it ok to use sweet n low in place of stevia that has mannitol which is even worse than sorbitol?
I am allergic to cow’s milk and have a yeast sensitivity. I use coconut milk and no flour. Is rice flour yeast free?
Should have said I haven’t found the Stevia syrup anywhere yet.
For people in the UK I got Tate&Lyle Light At Heart White Sugar Stevia Blend450g in Tesco. This is a powder form so can be used in baking as well as in tea/coffee’. I have never used artificial sweeteners as I try to use natural products if possible. This is a mixture of cane sugar and stevia.
They also stock Green Canderel Stevia 100Pk of tablets which have no mention of cane sugar.
This was tasty, but I also added a bit of cane sugar rather than stevia. As another poster wrote–I too wonder if Trim Down has an agreement with stevia manufacturers. Despite being natural, it’s expensive, has an aftertaste, and at 0 kcal, seems too good to be true. Also, the portion prescribed for this in my meal plan was double what the avg. person would eat. Also totaled about 450 kcal for two cups. Seems rather steep when I was supposed to add cheese to the meal, too.
Much too sweet…
For years I’ve been having rolled (slow cook) oats and rice milk.
Occasionally I’ll add fruit. No sweetener of any sort or salt.
May I substitute Steel Cut Oats?
What do I do with the 1 cup of water??
What us SWG and raw milk? I use 2% and am on a very low budget so using more expensive products, ie, organic etc is just not possible.
Is this recipe one serving? Seems like a lot even if it is good for you.
Does anyone on this site have google?
Raw milk follow below link
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raw_milk
Liquid Stevia taste much better and comes in flavor. Very concentrated, only use. Couple of drops. Cream vanilla is great. I use it in everything.
Stevia can be found at most grocery stores in your area like Walmart and Price Chopper. I shop at Walmart and it is in the isle with sugar and the artificial sweetner. Stevia is a natual sweetner derived from plants.
you can get stevia in a grocery store, walmart. yes it’s a sweetner.
Could you please tell me where to get Stevia and what it is. I imagine it is a sweetner? Thanks
DO I EAT ALL THE ITEMS AT EACH MEAL OR PICK AND ENTRE LISTED , SEEMS LIKE A LOT OF FOOD FOR EACH MEAL
Dear Team;
What is Stevia syrup and where do you purchase it?
Thanks
Marion Knarr
Raw milk is also illegal to sell in the state of Wisconsin. I will be using organic. Can Stevia syrup be made the same way as simple syrup?
I would not be happy using a microwave.
I normally eat oats made with water and add a Banana or mixed berries
Raw Milk is Unpasterised, I’m just switching over to Organic Milk instead. Some things are hard to find.
Why not regular rolled oats, they will cook in microwave in 3 min, and why the stevia, change your sweet tooth and just use the fruit as the only sweetener needed. Are you selling Stevia?
Raw milk is unpasterised. I was told it is illegal to sell raw milk in the UK. Where can I buy stevia sweetener and syrup in the UK?
I also ask what is raw milk etc.
What is stevia syrup?
questions: 1. what is swg? 2. raw? milk???? 3. eggs for meals?
What is Raw Milk
