MemberHi, stageofun. Coconut milk is a source of saturated fats, which have been linked to heart disease risks, but also include medium chain triglycerides, which have been shown to benefit certain digestive diseases. Coconut water has been shown to be nourishing to brain tissue, and some believe that the milk may be also (though there is less research there). Almond fat has been shown to have a beneficial fatty acid profile, including some omega-3s. Therefore, as much as it sounds counter-intuitive, the higher fat version is actually better.
Note that coconut milk and almond milk have essentially no protein, and need to be fortified to provide the same vitamin and calcium content as dairy milk.
I would recommend the almond milk for most of your milk needs, but certainly 1/3 of your use can be coconut if you like it best.April 16, 2013 at 10:36 pm #10991inastrvl
MemberThanks Stgeofun, for your encouragement. I won’t give up and go back to my larger portions. I know that I have more energy and am able to do some exercise. I have a bad hip which could qualify for replacement but because of Fibro and back issues I probably would not achieve pain free. I am on some extra meds and now I can walk and move around. ENOUGH of the Organ Recital!
Life is good I have much for which to be grateful. So I will persevere living this program and stay on track. I think the remarks on this site are quite helpful. Some times I have to work at having the snacks but I am never hungry. Eliminating sugars from my regime and only natural sugars suggested are good for our health. How long have you been diabetic? Are you a teacher or a student?
Thanks again for your input. This really helps……Ina

MemberOSSIE: What about Coconut oil? I have a huge container I bought from Dr. Mercola. It’s the solid kind. I used some tonight to fry Tilapia in and it was delicious with a hint of coconut. This is the first time I fried anything in it. There’s no carbs or sugar in it, but there are 14 gm of fat in 1 TBLSP.

MemberHi, Chia. Coconut oil is a source of saturated fats, which have been linked to heart disease risks, but also include medium chain triglycerides, which have been shown to benefit certain digestive diseases. Coconut water has been shown to be nourishing to brain tissue, and some believe that the oil may be also (though there is less research there). Note that research that has shown benefits of coconut oil in heart disease has been conducted mostly in populations that are accustomed to coconuts (i.e. the far east), and so their genes can take it.
It has a bit of an advantage in cooking because it does not oxidize (turn bad) as easily as oils with a lot of omega-3s. I would still suggest to use it in moderation and favor olive oil for your non-cooking needs.April 17, 2013 at 11:01 pm #11019Seaborngirl
MemberHI there everyone….
CHIA…if you can’t use the coconut oil up for cooking, it can be used in other ways. It is very good in the hair….leave it in for a few hours and wash it out. We used to do this when we lived in the tropics. Also good on the skin….not face though…too rich for that. I have used it to even clean my leather shoes and belts with…gives them a bit of a lift.April 18, 2013 at 5:00 am #11023stgeofun
MemberOssie, thanks for the advise. These products can be so confusing. Someone tells you it is so much better for you, someone else says it isn’t. I think I’m going to stick to my organic skim milk. lol I don’t use that much of it anyway.
Ina…I have been a diabetic for 8 years now. I am a student (in a relaxed way). I am retired and our university offers classes for retirees. They are taught by volunteers, some are retired professors, but others just have an interest in their topic. There is no testing, it is purely for enjoyment and increases my knowledge and keeps me thinking! I love it! I took seven classes last semester!
I dropped that last pound today…now I’m back where I left off before vacation! lol I have upped my exercise, and I think that is what did it.
I keep waiting for life to slow down, but I don’t think it’s ever going to, so we just have to keep trying to do our best.
Good Luck Everyone!

MemberI am starting Day 15 and now have a loss of 3 1/2 pounds. It is getting easier to follow the program. I am never hungry and the fact that I eat at home for all of my meals with the exception of Saturday when I have a lunch out. This is a good way to live, not being hungry or feeling guilty for over eating. Thanks for your encouragement.

MemberSeaborngirl: Wouldn’t it be awfully greasy and oily to get out of hair? Is it more for the scalp, or making the hair healthy? Will it dry pretty quickly on leather? Do you just put a nickel or dime size amount in your hand and rub it into the skin? Will it soak in fast? I don’t like lotions or oil that stay oily for a long time and then get on clothes.

MemberI tried the chicken and black bean quesadillas today. I thought they were very good. I like the SWG tortillas, however, they do not stick together as well as the flour ones. I like the texture and taste much better though.
I also tried a recipe that was in our Sunday paper. It is grilled potatoes that are then tossed in balsalmic vinegar, olive oil, fresh basil, salt and pepper. After coating them, put a little Parmasan cheese on them. They were pretty good. I just cut up the potatoes and grilled them for about 5-7 minutes, turning them once. They were perfect. The recipe says to eat them cold. I ate them hot, but the left-overs will be like another dish.
Went to the gym today and I feel really good about stepping up my exercise. I do ten minutes on the treadmill and then 5 minutes on the eliptical, and repeat that for an hour.
It’s a beautiful day here today. I hope all of your days are beautiful!April 18, 2013 at 9:30 pm #11060inastrvl
MemberI have been using coconut oil for my hair as a conditioner at night. It soaks in and makes the hair healthy not greasy. I also use it for my skin after my shower. It is really great and this is what I bought it for.

MemberMorning to you all….it was terrible hearing the news last night about the fertilizer blast in West, Texas! After the Boston tragedy it must be tough on a lot of people in America right now…my heart goes out to you all.
CHIA….I know coconut oil reduces protein loss in hair, whether it has been damaged or not. It is a cosmetic favourite in the tropics. It repels water, so it is good on things like leather…not sure how long it takes to dry, but with any oil you would need to rub in well, and leave to settle. I would just wipe before I used the shoes or belt or what ever anyway. As for the hair, I used to rub in a small amount (like a nickel size, but more if you need it). I would leave it in for a few hours while I did my daily stuff, and then wash out as usual. Yes, it might need a couple of good washes, but I remember it leaving the hair feeling lovely and it had a great shine to it. I used it on my skin as well, but those were the days I lived on the beach and in the sea. These days, I don’t do that as much, and don’t live in the tropics, but in winter I get dry itchy skin, and use an oil mixed into my normal moisturiser. I have been looking for a tub of organic coconut oil for cosmetic purposes, so when I start using it again, I will let you know how it goes. But I suggest you try the oil you have…give it a go on the hair.
KATIE…great to see you are doing so well mate….I laughed about the “crikey” comment…I didn’t mean it to be funny, but in hindsight, I guess it would have come across that way!!! It is a word I don’t use too often these days, but it just comes out sometimes when I am expressing myself strongly!!! Oh dear!!! Trust you to find it funny….lol…you sound like me…I love languages, and have always been fascinated by the way they are used in different countries and cultures.
Anyway, I must be off here…got a busy day…it was my best mate’s birthday last week, and she is working full-time over the next couple of weeks. We are driving out to have a “sleep-over” on their farm tonight, and I am cooking a roast pork and vegetables for her. Got a big day coming up, so I have to move!!! Have a great day everyone….Bev.

MemberSEABORNGIRL & inastrvl: Thank you both for your comments about coconut oil. I’ll have to try it on my hair and dry skin. 🙂 I have a large tub of the solid, not liquid that I ordered from Dr. Mercola some time ago. In the states, he’s very much into health products, supplements with the best ingredients from all over the world, healthy foods including some raw foods (meats), etc. He has been on Dr. OZ TV show. He has his own company on supplements that he creates. He’s from the state of Illinois. Look him up on mercola.com. He has almost any supplement you might need, and lots of videos on his products, that are very interesting. He’s very knowledgeable. I get my probiotic from him.

MemberAfter hearing all the benefits derived from a scalp massage with coconut, I gave it a try. It really did not seem to help that much and my head kept sliding off my pillow……………LOL.
