Meagan LeeMemberapensa,
While you are resting from your injury you can try a modified form of pilates to get your exercise since you are missing your walks. You can really work on your core and get in a great work out even when you are in bed. Or if you have light dumbbell weights lying around you can work on your upper body strength by doing sitting shoulder presses, bicep curls, over head tricep extension, and even chest presses. Please let me know if you have any questions!Meagan

apensaMemberMeagan….THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!!! My wife does have some light dumbbells around….what weights would you suggest? Also, is there someplace I could go to see exactly what these exercises look like and any other details that would assure I am doing them correctly. I am also limited in the fact that I have a shoulder problem that does not affect my normal activities but prevents me from doing a lot of overhead movement……..I will never be the first string pitcher…..lol. Thanks again for your input.

apensaMemberMeagan…..by the way, When I first saw your picture, I could swear it was my daughter. My wife agrees.

Meagan LeeMemberapensa,
I would say 2-5 lbs. No more than that amount.
http://www.dumbbell-exercises.com/exercises/index.html is a good resource for dumbbell exercises.Being a pitcher is overrated! 🙂 Alternative movements can be used to avoid doing things over head like tricep kickbacks and side laterals (listed on the website).
I am sure your daughter is very lovely then! 😀
Let me know if you have any questions!

apensaMemberThanks for the info, Meagan. My wife had some 2lb so I started with those but went out and got me some five pounders…..ouch….LOL. She dragged out one of her exercise DVD’s with a gal on one of those big balance balls. Because of my knee, I opted to use a chair. The wife is making me do the upper body workout every other day for 10 minutes. I’ll take a look at the link you so graciously sent in your post. Thanks.

CHIAMemberAPENSA: I was thinking the same thing, but I think everyone is very busy in the summer time as I am. Have great Summer!

apensaMemberHi, Jude, and welcome. I guess in a way this forum is ill-named since many of us are really no longer newbies and 2013 is well along but the spirit of the forum is still present. It is wonderful that you have jumped in and are doing well.
Hey, Chia. How you been? I actually wrote to ossie in another forum to see if this was still going. I’m still laid up to a certain extent with this knee injury. I have good days and bad days. I don’t deserve it but I have lost 12 pounds in weight since I joined in and God knows I don’t strictly adhere to the guidelines. At least I have a sense of better eating habits. I just wish my body would look a little more like I lost the weight. Still carrying the unused “love handles” and belly flab. Since the knee injury I have had to quit my morning regimen of walking on the treadmill…..I hope Peddles doesn’t think I let her down. My wife, however, coaches me into doing the upper body workout with dumbbells.
Be good, everyone.

CHIAMemberHi apensa: Congratulations on losing 12 lbs. That’s great! You’re losing, not gaining and that’s all that counts. Losing slowly is actually better because your body can adjust better to keep it off. And the fact that you are learning about the right foods to eat is a blessing for you. On my diet I have lost 23 lbs. 30 lbs to go. I’m wearing smaller clothes now and that’s such a good feeling and an incentive 🙂 For me, the secret is to eat more good proteins (Try not to eat hardly any sugar. Sugar is poison and cancer loves to grow on sugar. Keep up the good work 🙂

CHIAMemberAPENSA: I forgot to mention that I need back surgery and a left knee replacement. I’m trying to put it off this summer because I don’t want to be laid up while the weather is nice to be outside. I’m doing aquatic therapy and will start the lumbar stretchng table next week along with my other therapy.

CHIAMemberAPENSA: Sorry, I keep thinking of something else to write after I submit my post 🙂 If you eat lean meat proteins and use a good protein in shakes and use them sometime everyday and watch the bad fats, eat good veggies and fruit with less carbs and sugars, you will automatically gain muscle and lose fat.
June 18, 2013 at 8:11 pm #12650
CHIAMemberApensa: Be sure you eat 8 oz of lean mean meats per day for dinner only. You can divide that up into 2 different meals if you want to, but dinner is best. Only bake or grill your meats. No breading or fat oils. I use good Olive oil.

apensaMemberGee, Chia, what you said about your upcoming surgeries make my knee problem seem like a trifle. Good luck. I just got a call back from my doctor’s office and they have agreed to see me for the knee. Problem is the first appointment is not until July 29. Your dietary advice is just about the way I eat. I don’t have the protein shakes all the time…just when my wife decides to make them. Outside of that it is salads and lean meat…..oh, yeah, an occasional dinner out…..like tonight, tomorrow and the next day. What’s a guy to do when he is so popular…..LOL
