Marcia, for dairy-free “dairy,” simply select the “vegan” items in the dairy category. You can find them in the same health-oriented shops as you would the other items – i.e., large chains such as Whole Foods Market and Trader Joe’s.

Another note for Marcia: the Menu Planner was recently expanded to include more foods, including those that are more conventional in nature. The main point is to choose items that are whole, fresh, and unprocessed as much as possible.
Having said that, it is important to note that many of the common foods with which we have been surrounded for most of our lives are not so healthy, and wreak havoc with the metabolism. It might be good to try some of the newer foods out gradually, see what you and your family might actually like or find a recipe that enables you to enjoy them. It is good to introduce the whole family to healthy eating habits, both for them and to build yourself a comfortable environment in which you can meet your health goals.

Hi, Janet VanKeulen. Thanks for your measurements and score. I see that the score is a bit low, so it piques my interest regarding what is in your menu. Can you cut and paste a typical day’s menu here? I will look it over and compare the calculations to your stats.

Hi, GinnerLou. If you are familiar with the respective baking properties of different flours and how to compensate for any differences, you absolutely can exchange the flours. Quinoa can generally be substituted for brown rice flour in a one-to-one ratio – note that the texture may be more substantial than the rice flour recipe (slightly thicker and heavier).

Hi All, I started the diet 3 days ago and have lost 8lbs! Very happy with my flying start although I guess it will level out. Am also in UK and struggling to find SWG bread. Will rye bread do?

Thaks, Ossie. Is it the butter itself or the portion of butter. Does using another oil with the butter sort of do an offsetting action? How about that butter with olive oil they sell or just some olive oil with the butter?

Here is another one for someone to give an opinion. For my birthday, knowing how much I love Italian Deli items and the lack of Italian Delis where I live, my daughter gave me a portion of Mortadella (Italian Baloney sort of) and some “fixed” olives (olive oil and spices). I have been using the mortadella with proveloni cheese on one slice of SWG bread, about four of each olives (green and black) as a meal or snack. How does that sound?

This is my 1st day on the program. Am I really supposed to eat all this food? 1 1/2 c oatmeal, 12 oz. yogurt, 17 grapes & 1/4 c egg salad??? What if I can’t eat it all?

OSSIE; I will keep these e-mails too but want to ask which forum would be best for Trim Down questions and answers per se?
Are you the Dietitian on all the other forums?
Would you please answer the questions I asked you in the other post, before I start using a different forum? I pasted them here:
OSSIE, MY DIET QUESTION IS: I CAN’T FIND THESE DIFFERENT KINDS OF FLOUR. CAN I STILL MAKE THE RECIPES FOR MUFFINS AND ALL RECIPES THAT CALL FOR FLOUR, WITH MY REGULAR FLOUR? THE NUTRITION MAY BE DIFFERENT, BUT ARE THE # OF CALORIES, measurements, CARBS, ETC THE SAME AS REGULAR FLOUR. Currently, I use Pillsberry self-rising flour. Also, I have stopped losing weight. When I reached 180, I stopped and flucuate up and down 2-3 lbs now for over a week. How can I get going again??? (Is there a place, website, or other place to see how to switch all of these healthier flours from Pillsbury Self-Rising, or vice-versa?) I would really appreciate your own knowledge to these questions. Thank you and will be watching for your reply 🙂

This will be my first day. I know I need to eat healthier, and needed help in that area. I worry about portions, as I don’t eat a lot, just not the right things. Also about the availability of some items, as I live in a very small town in the mountains of BC. I have a question about green tea. I drank it as a child, and it was green, nearly colorless but tasty. The green tea I buy now looks like black tea when it is steeped. Where can I get real green tea?

re green tea, I drink it alot, the tea I have was brought back from russia by a friend, but i’m sure it will be available online through a wholefood outlet or a tea merchant, mines in a long tubular tin with dragons embossed on it, with jasmine, its absolutely delightful

Hi All – Welcome to the newbies.
Well I haven’t been posting because I have been busy. Feel like I have been eating for three days. We went with friends on a houseboat, 2 hour CRUISE up the River Murray to a reserve for the Australia day celebrations. Locked away on a houseboat with food everywhere. I tried very hard to nibble at fruits but also indulged in other yummy things. I am not an emotional eater but tend to eat when it is sitting in front of me. I will take Ossie’s comments on board as we did enjoy ourselves. Oh and there was wine too!
Kelz1973 – Thank you for the website details. I emailed and of course they don’t deliver here but they are happy if I pick up but they are way down south somewhere. Their website looks good.
Seaborn – Hope all is well up there. The TV reports are not good. Massive flooding, roads and communications cut – some areas around 40 inches of rain in 24 hours. We are dry here – we only have 13 inches in a whole year! Can’t imagine the water.
Jackiee – Hope your family are all back to good health – how could they be otherwise with your fantastic nursing. I haven’t done any more to the “palace” but I did try my dragon boat paddling last Wednesday. My shoulder was OK although I only did about half the training. I need to get my exercise going. Got to finish reading all the news from you all. Good luck to everyone!

    Hi everyone,
I’m Atheen. I’m 66 and retired. After a hectic life, I find myself with no one but myself to take care of and nothing to do with my time but to do so! I joined this program yesterday and got started today. I’m already not doing what I’m supposed to do, typically, but I’m okay with that. I lost about 50# over the last year by using common sense and increasing my activity level, but I decided to see what this site was about in order to keep myself on track and motivated; I still have a way to go before I reach a comfortable weight. So far I’m enjoying the articles, recipe suggestions, and the supportive message boards. We’ll see how I do. I tend to be analytical and cerebral in my approach to problems, and this site seems designed to cater to that mind-set in many ways.

atheen, you hit the nail on the head. Common sense and keeping active. I imagine that there are some that for some reason or another, it is not enough. I think you will find the forums and food ideas beneficial. I love the part about being analytical and cerebral about things…..I guess that is where ghe term being “anal” comes from…anyway, me too. I don’t know if it is a stalling tactic or what.
