How is it possible to gain 3 lbs. from one meal?

Hi smsupersuper – it’s easy, I just did it. Good thing I was watching what I ate. But it should come off quickly if I go right back on my eating plan. Shouldn’t be as hard to take off getting at it right away. Good luck – consider it a meal well enjoyed and put it behind you. Lots of luck

3 lbs.?? My guess is salt and fat. Most should fall off in a few days with lots of water and eating sensibly. Janie

    Thanx Georgia

I’m glad to see i’m not the only one who is severely metabolically challenged.

Unfortunately doesn’t appear to be a quick fix. It’s been 3 days and only 1/2 lb. shed.

    Better luck to you!

Thanx for your theories on salt & fat Janie.

The most sodium would have come from the homemade gravy. Everything else was whole foods and I don’t use table salt. My fat intake was 31% higher. Do you think that is worth 3 lbs? Other than a coffee first thing in the morning, all I drink is water but it’s not coming off nearly as quickly as it went on.

Thanx again for the support and encouragement. Will try to do better for New Years.

Hi, Sandy! I, too, am metabolically challenged! Weight comes off VERY slowly for me. Have you had your thyroid checked? Sometimes that factors in! Or, hormones! Have those levels checked, if you are able. I finally gave in and started taking thyroid meds. My doctors tried to get me to go with the no startches diet. DON’T LISTEN to them!!! lol

    Good Morning Blessingcatcher

My dr. says that both my thyroid & hormones are fine. My naturopath put me on thyroid therayp anyway but it doesn’t seem to be doing much of anything.

It is comforting to know that there are others out there like me. When I say that I can gain 11 lbs. in 3 days, people think i am as crazy as if i said i had 3 eyes.

Hi smsupersuper – I’m not sure you should be on thyroid therapy if there is nothing wrong with your thyroid. Taking medication could throw off the natural balance of this gland and then you could be on medication the rest of your life. I know it’s a tough thing to do – drop weight quickly and easily. When I was a lot younger I could splurge and have the weight back down in one to two days – not now. Takes about a week if it’s only 2 lbs. But 2 lbs. per week is a healthy way to lose weight – there is no stress on your internal organs that way and it is easier to keep the weight off. I am working hard at it every day and the weight comes off by ounces, not pounds but as long as it is going down, I don’t mind it taking a while. After all, it took me a few years to put it all on. You may want to check with your doctor again – not your naturapath – I would hate to see you having thyroid problems if it’s avoidable. Good luck and keep us posted – we’re all in the same boat and paddling like mad.

Thanx for the heads up Georgia.

I went to see a naturopath because my dr. doesn’t seem to take anything seriously if he can’t write a script for it. Any time I try talking to him about my weight his only words of wisdom are “it’s hard” & writes a req. for bloodwork.

Hi, Sandy (again!) lol. My endocrinologist is not concerned with my weight … even though I was 20+ lbs overweight when I first saw him. I was not obese, so he was unconcerned. I had not been that heavy for 30+ years and it was constantly on my mind. My thyroid WAS off kilter, though. But, if you have had the bloodwork and it didn’t show any difficulty with those two things, then let’s check on something else.
Are you weighing and measuring your portions every time? Are you eating everything on your menu suggestion? Are you strict with your preparations (i.e. no extra fats)? And drinking plenty of water?
Next: are you getting some form of exercise almost every day? Ossie suggested to me, when I was on a plateau for 3 mos that I try changing up my exercise. If you are already exercising regularly, try changing it up a bit. Try that first.
Also, Geo is right. You want a slow weight loss. Ounces … not lbs per day. Even a couple pounds per month is good. Actually 1/2 lb in 3 days is pretty good. That would be about a lb per week or 3-4 lbs per month. It will depend on how much you have to lose. (I haven’t looked at your stats.) Also, your weight may fluctuate. I go up and down, if I weigh more than weekly. EVEN when I am faithfully eating what is on my list and weighing and measuring everything.
So, talk to me about these things. How are they for you? I may not get back to you real quickly … will be out of town a couple days, but I will check back for your answer when I return. 😉 jan

    Good Afternoon Blessingcatcher

No, I didn’t weigh my food at the Xmas table.

I try to follow the ratios on the menu but I have to cut everything in half. I gain weight if I eat as much as what’s on the menu. I eat no extra fat and other than my first coffee of the day, all I drink is water.

I exercise for an hour every day. I also started lifting weights in July but that didn’t seem to increase my metabolism either.

I just don’t understand when they say 3,500 calories is a pound, how 2,340 is worth 3.

Have a Happy New Year & talk 2 u when u get back.

lol. Hi, Sandy. No, I know you didn’t weigh everything on your holiday table. I meant as a general rule. Have you actually tried the TDC program as written? The diet as prescribed for you? I know it sounds like a lot of food, but it all works together … in certain amounts at certain times.
Are you sure you are getting enough? Enough food? Enough fats? Doing without totally and cutting in half is very severe. I was on a plateau (as I told you) and ended up cutting out ONE of my starches as well as changing up my exercise. But, that is by no means as severe as what you are doing. I think you may be defeating the program, by cutting out so much. … Just a thought. I know the TDC is a balanced meal plan that is set up following the American Diabetic Association’s guidelines. It is set up to keep you from putting your body into starvation mode and to keep you from getting hungry… hence the good sized portions and the 6 mini meals per day. Perhaps Ossie can weigh in on this and think of something else! But, if you have not followed it to the “t”, give it a try. Many people dismiss it because they think it will not work for them. (Wish we could sit down and chat and I could ask you these things one at a time! 🙂 ) And, remember, TDC is NOT set up by calories. It is WHAT you eat and HOW MUCH and WHEN that they look at.

    Welcome Back Blessingcatcher

As a rule everything is fine. It is only one meal that got me. I didn’t indulge all season. I just let loose for one meal.

It isn’t a severe as it sounded. It is as you, cutting the grains in half.

My body has probably been in starvation mode for years and I am unwilling to put the weight back on. How much would I have to gain?

I joined the TDC as a healthier way to look at food, I am really not too concerned about loosing.

That being said there is still only one way to loose weight and that is to take in less calories than you burn but unfortunately my body doesn’t burn the way any plan or any body seems to think it should.

Thanks for the welcome, Sandy! And I understand about the weight on one meal. My body does that when I eat out! And, tonight’s New Year’s! Hope you do ok!! 😉
