MemberThis being my 81st birthday I am interested in using coconut oil as brain food. How does it fit into the program?

MemberI’ve been hearing about this from my friend’s mother. She is 87 and gets stuff in the mail about this. I’d like to know more about this topic. Is using coconut oil better than the hard form that comes in a jar. Is it a liquid? Is that why it is being touted as good for you and your brain. What is it about the product that is supposed to be good for the brain. Who is saying this is a good product, besides the things sent to people in the mail that try to sell products. Any good published studies?

MemberThere is no real difference in benefits between coconut oil and butter (solid) unless the solid product has been hydrogenated, and then it is a big no-no. Benefits to brain have been linked to young coconut juice and to the medium chain triglycerides (MCT) in coconut fats – see links to abstracts for scientific articles here http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21114897
