i was told bye my dr. i need a high fiber diet. then i was told to much fiber will constipate me more. how much fiber use i be taking in every day????
Hi, issy50. It sounds like the ideal amount for you may be around 30 grams per day (the bottom of the recommended range). Note that the fiber picture is a little more involved than just the total amount. It is also important that you divide intake throughout the day and get plenty of fluid with it (i.e., a full glass of water or equivalent for each high-fiber meal).
Just as important, if you are starting out on a high-fiber diet (such as in the Trim Down Club program) and have not really had high-fiber intake before, it is important to gradually increase your intake to your goal – keep the lower fiber foods and upgrade to or add one high-fiber every couple of days. This means the switch from white bread or rice to 100% whole grain, cooked vegetables to raw, etc.
Then pay close attention to your body over the weeks – counting and comparing to your previous condition is very important.
