ParticipantIs soy milk allowed, smart balance, wine, cocktail? Avoid artificial chemicals?

MemberHi, Carolyn. One of the principles of the program is to avoid artificial chemicals and processed foods, and soy milk does fall into this category; additionally, it has anti-nutrients that are neutralized only by fermentation and extended heat exposure (long cooking) – if you find you must use soy milk, those would be our recommendations.
SmartBalance is also processed – true it is better than most margarines, so if your health or veganism does not permit use of real butter, then this or an olive oil-based margarine would suffice. When possible, try to use olive oil instead of either.
Alcohol is a reality of life, so we can’t say never, ut if you can get down to less than one drink per day (1/2 cup of wine or 1.5 oz spirits), that would be best. Two points here:
1. Cocktails often have sugary mixers that can wreak havoc on your weight loss efforts. If you really want the alcohol, try to mix something low-sugar such as gin with soda water and flavor with regular lemon or lime instead of syrups, etc.
2. Alcohol itself is processed in the body like both carbs and fats, so the amounts should be counted as such. HOWEVER, do try to minimize the amount of nutritious foods you cut out to make room for it. - AuthorPosts
