    I have two things that I want to check on. One, there is a history of breast cancer on my mother’s side of the family. I was told by a family doctor that soy products should not be eaten because of that history. Is it all soy products or is it the way some soy products are processed? Two, I have a personal history of gout. For example, I tried the Atkins diet and I got a flare up within two weeks. Are the protein servings high enough in your menus that I need to worry about that?

    1. There is a lot of controversy about soy products, with some research suggesting it may actually be protective. A lot probably has to do with the genes and gene “polymorphisms” involved in the cancer. One thing for sure, do avoid soy oil and in general products high in omega-6 fatty acids – best for you is extra-virgin olive oil and oils high in omega-3s.
    As for the processing – yes, this is a huge factor. Soy is one of those crops that is very important to buy organic. Further, the best soy is fermented (i.e. tempeh, miso, fuyu, etc.) or green (edamame), and avoid fancy meat replicas based on soy.
    2. Protein is very high in this program, and because you choose the foods in your menus, you can avoid those that irritate gout such as organ meats, shellfish, sardines, mackerel, cured meats (like cold cuts, sausages, bacon), yeast products.
