How do you know what kind of products to buy i.e. when it comes to yogurt, do you buy plain yogurt or can you buy flavored. What about adding salt or seasonings to your food or butter to your breads. How do you know if you can add those things. I am new to this type of cooking since all the other “diets” I have been on were clear as to no sugar, no coffee, no butter. I want to do this right. It’s a lifestyle change for me and I want to get it right sooner than later. Thank you.

Hi, DrJayz. Unless specified as flavored, the yogurt is plain – the flavored has added sugar that needs to be counted as carbohydrates. Seasonings are encouraged, and salt should be used in moderation – but these are free, and so not counted in the menu.

I am using a water enhancer(Kool Aid enhancer),I can drink water much easier by using just a squirt in a 32oz.glass of water. Is this ok, or is ir bad for my diet?

Hi, Ruby. It’s not recommended, sorry. It contains an artificial sweetener shown in research to work against weight loss efforts. The easiest way to flavor waters is to squeeze in some lemon or lime and add a natural low-calorie sweetener such as xylitol. If you want to prepare the water in advance, you can soak some berries in it, then strain out the berries and add sweetener, if you wish.

Hey DrJayz, my husband was a huge pop drinker and could not or would not drink just plain water but his Dr’s had told him he really needed to cut the pop out entirely, so I figured it was that he needed flavor to the water so I would make a full pitcher of water and cut up lemon and limes and he could drink it even without the sugary taste and then eventually he was able to drink just good old plain water. Good luck!
