Hello. I just joined the trim down club for help in losing weight with Hypothyroidism. I have tried various other diets/ways of eating that only made me gain weight and feel worse in the end.I know there are certain foods that someone with hypothyroidism should avoid and some that are the best to eat. Is there anyone here that has this problem and has found the answers?

    Thanks for your help.

I joined yesterday and will be very interested in any help with this topic as I am afflicted with hypothyroidism and hashimoto as well. I’m struggling with the menu planner since I have other health issues in addition.

How are you finding the menu planner and food selections?

Hi Laurie, I am Laurie as well. I have not received any help with this question but what I am doing is changing up the menu with the things that I know I can and cannot eat. You can switch things out if you don’t like them. I have also bought things that are gluten free and non-processed foods. I will be starting the actually “eating” tomorrow as I purchased everything last night. I went through week 1, every item and chose things that I could eat. Good luck to you. Let’s keep in touch and encourage each other. 🙂

    Hi Laurie,

I’d like that a great deal. How long have you had hypothyroid decease? I was diagnosed about 7 years ago. Shortly after I was diagnosed with hashimoto, which is an autoimmune that attacks the thyroid.

I have also been trying to replace the menu items with ones I like. I’m trying to figure out how the exchange sections works. I know the menu adds up a daily count for protein and carbs. I’ve been trying to keep track of fiber and carbs so this will be a little different for me.

I’m in the US, in New Jersey specifically.

    Hi Laurie,

I live in Virginia so not too far from you. I was just diagnosed with it last year and have been just taking my meds and eating what I wanted. I’ve never felt “great” so I’ve done some research and found that I needed to change what I was eating. I’m also a part of Weight Watchers and was eating a bunch of strawberries, broccoli and things that I didn’t know what I was supposed to eat. This is a learning process for me as I’m sure it is for you too.

With the menu, you have options that you can choose if there are things that you don’t want/like.

Hi, there. I’ll just add my two cents. It is generally recommended that people with hypothyroid conditions limit goitrogenic foods, such as the following:
Cassava (tapioca), when crushed and not detoxified by soaking
Soybeans (and soybean products such as tofu, soybean oil, soy flour, soy lecithin)
    Pine nuts
    Peanuts
    Flax seed
    Millet
    Strawberries
Cruciferous vegetables: Bok choy and other green leafy vegetables such as collards, kale and spinach; Broccoli and related vegetables, Brussels sprouts, Cabbage, Cauliflower
    Horseradish
    Canola
    Kohlrabi
    Rutabagas (swedes)
    Turnips
    Pears
    Peaches
    Bamboo shoots
    Sweet potatoes

Thanks so much for the information. I hadn’t realized that there were foods to avoid until Laurie Gilbert mentioned strawberries and broccoli in our chat. I now realize that they can affect the medication prescribed for hypothyroid… I have been off and on so many restricted diets thru the years and I feel like I very limited to what I can actually eat that will help me drop some weight. It gets a little frustrating.

I still going to give it a true and do my best to stick with foods that are healthy.

I just joined today and read this forum since I too have struggled with Hypothyroidism. I just shopped last night and bought several things that Ossie- Sharon listed before reading this. After reading the list I googled foods you shouldn’t eat and she is right. Thanks for asking this question as I had no idea and learn something new. Living on a small island in Alaska has its shopping challenges but it helps to know what to shop for. Thanks everyone.

    Hi, Brenda, and thanks, tshanely.
Brenda, anything that isn’t on the list below is fine. Foods that are particularly good for thyroid health are those rich in omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants. Black beans are fine.

I have under-active thyroid which made my weight leap up to 15 stone. Is there any advice anyone can give to make the weight go down. I have now got gallstones and my doctor is concern that there is fat on the liver. Going to get rid of Gallstone soon but what is bothering me is how to get rid of the weight and fat in my body.

Hi, ikinmoore. Getting your thyroid levels stable is the most beneficial thing you can do. See my previous responses as to how to avoid working against the medication you are taking.
As for the gallstones, this program is already designed to help prevent flares – moderate fat, low in simple carbohydrates, and promoting gradual weight loss.

Hi, Brenda. You may know by your thyroid levels, the dose your doctor prescribes of your thyroid medication (if you are taking any), and ultimately if you are less sluggish and having less trouble losing/managing body weight.
