    I am new to the program and have spent a great deal of time exploring the site, the menu planner, forums and other tools offered here. I am the type of person who enjoys planning my own menus and would like to know if there is a tool designed to allow me to do this? I have seen that there is a great deal of information published here: http://www.trimdownclub.com/exchanges, but have not seen a formula that breaks out the goals for daily consumption by meal category. I suppose I could figure it out but it would be much easier to simply ask. Thanks!

    Hi, you took the words right out of my mouth! My husband started this plan Monday and I have tried to follow the plan, when we had the appropriate foods. But occasionally I need to exchange and don’t find many options. Just when I think I’ve figured it out, they throw me a curve.
    I’m wondering if there is something to do with the particular combo of things, both per meal/snack and per day/work?

    Hi, you two. Click on “Exchange mode” in the toolbar above your finished menu, and you will see your personal pattern. You can also build your menu one meal at a time by clicking on the arrow at the upper right corner of each meal – you will be directed to a mini-application.
    By the way – don’t forget the “-lists” at the end of the link to the exchange lists (as in, http://www.trimdownclub.com/exchanges-lists).

    Thank You. That helps although not very flexible. Be sure to go thru and click on all of the foods you like (all meals)or they won’t show up in the search.

    Question: I skipped fruit at breakfast and added fruit to my salad at lunch.Why did it say that I was over the limit for fruit?

    Hi, Snippers. It just meant that you were over the limit for that particular meal – just ignore it if you had moved it from a previous meal.

    Thanks. Looking at things in exchange mode helps. What remains missing is an indication of the goal for each meal / snack.

    Would you be willing to indicate the optimal range of values for each category?

    My goal in asking these questions is not to be critical or ask you to reveal anything proprietary – I am really trying to learn.

    Reading further I understand that these numbers will likely vary depending on the individual’s menu pattern.

    Could you help me with mine?

    Thanks for your responses. Was also wondering if there was a way to monitor/control calories? My husband is supposed to be limited to 1650/day but when his full day is added up(calculator from his physical trainer) he sometimes comes up with about 200-300 calories over. If you have an “argument” against monitoring, I will defer to your system over the trainers. Thanks again.

    Hi, NormanBird. We don’t work with calories here, but rather with components that meet your nutritional needs, including calories. If you click on “Exchange view” in the toolbar above your finished menu, you will see the exchanges for each food group that you are allotted.
    With all due respect to the trainer, unless your husband is very short, skinny, and inactive, 1650 calories appears to be much too low for him, and may result in rebound weight gain.
    If you post his age, height, weight, and activity level here, I will get back to you with calculations/recommendations.

    My husband is 64 yrs old, 5’7″(ish), 224 lbs. until recently, he’s been very sedentary. But we have both started a fitness program since beginning of January. He carries most of his weight in his abdomen(beer belly look).
    I am glad to hear your feeling re calories. I thought it sounded awfully low too. When we input his food for the day on “dot fit” software(used in their program), he often goes over…usually about 2000calories. I shared this program with my trainer and she has no problem with us using your menus.

    Still waiting to hear what you recommend for my husbands ht, wt, etc. as far as calories. I found that menu changer with little arrow in right hand corner. However it’s very sensitive and one false move of finger and you can’t retrieve all the work you just did with exchanges. Very frustrating!

    Hi, NormanBird. Your husband probably needs closer to 2000 calories for now (2200 on days that he is active). At this point, you can both follow exactly the same menu, with him having an extra exchange each of carb, protein, and vegetables or fruit on his active days.

    Hi, Snippers. The exchanges listed for you are your goals. Are you asking about a range for all adults, or if there is “wiggle room”? Or are you asking about grams of macronutrients (carbohydrates, proteins, fats) recommended for you each day?
