Hi there, I am suffering from this condition and trying to help it with the right nutrition. Just wondering if anyone has any information about this as I often find conflicting views about calcium intake and dairy intake etc.
    Many thanks

Hi, Georgia. Calcium intake is only part of the bone health equation. It is also important to eat certain fruits, such as those high in vitamin C (especially citrus) and apples (especially the skin, so it may be worth trying organic, and to get plenty of vitamin D.
Dairy intake does not have to be the primary. If you can find non-dairy sources, i.e. fortified nut/legume/grain milks (i.e. organic soy – organic is VERY important here), bone-critical nutrients may be even better absorbed and utilized, without undesirable effects. Finding a yogurt with active cultures can also provide a big boost.

I have been diagnosed as osteopenic, bordering osteoporosis. I was on Alendronic acid for about 4 yrs, now off it, and advised to limit my protein intake . Will the amount of protein in the trim down diet be disadvantageous to me?

Hi, judithb. There is indeed quite a bit of protein in this program. I would suggest to try getting more of your proteins from nuts and legumes (cook the legumes very well) – other than reducing the amount of protein each day, eating these items instead of animal products has been shown to help combat osteopenia/osteoprosis.
