Hi, TheKid. Nutritionally, the shake looks fine. What is the orange juice you are using? It would be best if you just throw in half an orange and a little extra water. Regarding the protein powder itself, it contains an artificial sweetener, acesulfame-K, which may work against your goals here. Is there another one you could use, perhaps unsweetened?

I remember many years ago they added raw eggs to make a shake. I think that eggs now have to be cooked to be considered safe to eat?

Hi, Patsy. Raw eggs are indeed not recommended – not only because of the safety concern you mentioned, but also because they contain a protein (destroyed in cooking) that depletes an important B-vitamin from your body.

I weigh 425 and am just starting. I have a habit of sleep eating. Sorry if I’m in wrong forum but I did not know where to go to ask question. I am working into the diet but am trying to make healthier choices. Not adhere to diet so strictly at first. I decided to eat sugar free fat free pudding as a substitute for desert which is what I have when I sleep eat. I know its got artificial sweetener but figure once I get into the routine of eating 6 times a day rather than one. I will stop the sleep eating since I will be having a balanced diet and keep metabolism up with several meals. Is this going to create a problem losing weight or should I be ok for now?

Hi, millereb. If you don’t feel an excessive urge to eat with the artificial sweetener, don’t worry about it for now. Hopefully the more frequent, balanced eating will stop the night eating – giving that up is a big step toward healthy weight management.

Hi Ossie, I am just starting this program only on my second week. I enjoy a certain shake I buy at Costco. It has 160 calories, 1g sugar, and 30g of protein. Here is list of the ingredients: Water, protein blend (milk from concentrate, calcium casemate, whey protein concentrate) cocoa powder, contains less than 1% of High Olec sunflower oil, potassium citrate, sodium hexametaphospate, magnesium phosphate, datem, salt, natural and artificial flavors, sucralose. 38mg Acesilfame potassium an 38mg of carrageaian. Sorry I have reading glasses on and even with that the print is so small. I know we should avoid sucralose, but can these replace a snack or breakfast on occasion when I am on the run?

Hi, annnee. The Premier shakes you’re describing have several artificial and inflammatory ingredients that may work against your goals here. It is generally best to avoid artificial sweeteners such as acesulfame K, sucralose, aspartame, and saccharin; if possible, it is also recommended to avoid carageenan and isolated casein. The following is an example of the type of all-natural ingredient list we prefer: http://www.gardenoflife.com/Products-for-Life/Foundational-Nutrition/RAW-Protein.aspx. If you’re interested in that product, it is available at Whole Foods Market and Trader Joe’s, among others.

What about ENSURE HIGH PROTEIN SHAKES? do they have inflammatory ingredients?

    #18385

Hi, Harvest. Yes, they do, as well as artificial sweeteners.
You would be better off with the same volume of a good quality organic milk (if you use dairy, then pasture-raised or grass-fed), with real cocoa powder or vanilla extract, and a natural non-caloric sweetener like inulin or monk fruit. It has less protein, but given the rest of the menu you get here, you will definitely not come up short.

Is this a good choice for my breakfast? Half of a frozen banana, 1 cup almond milk, and 1 scoop of egg white protein (Jay Robb)

Hi, Katie. That is a great combination to have as part of your breakfast. Be sure to get a source of good fats and some whole grains with it.
