can I drink tea and coffee

Hi, patdnurse. Yes, absolutely. If you make caffeinated selections, just be careful not to go over 4 cups per day. Also watch what you put in it – sweeteners and whiteners can be an issue.

Hi patdnurse, that is just the question I wanted to ask, but I would also like to ask, as I have IBS, if I eat anything fatty, the inevitable happens within half to 1 hour, so for the last few years, I have only ever had completely fat-free milk ( i.e. fully skimmed milk), whether in tea or coffee, on breakfast cereals, or just to drink on its own. I don’t have sugar in tea or coffee either. So, would I be allowed fully skimmed milk in my diet – I do only have small amounts at a time, in fact even on its own at bedtime, its only a about 2/3rds of a small tumbler, & I like my cereals crunchy so I only put enough in just to cover the bottom of the bowl.

Hi, lamason. If you have a sensitive condition such has IBS, I highly recommend that you use the fully personal version of the Menu Planner application, so that you can select the specific foods that work for you, and avoid the ones that don’t. You can access it by clicking on the “My Food Choices” icon (an apple) in the toolbar above your menu.

Hi & thank you for the replies. You must think I’m very rude not replying to you, but I’ve only just found this page, after adding some more about me in ‘My Profile’. Thanks for the ‘yes’ about skimmed milk and drinking no more than 4 cups a day; in fact that’s fine for me as my favourite drink is water. Unfortunately when having a nice relaxing bath last weekend, when I reached forward, I felt and heard my back crack and have been,& still am in a lot of pain when I move, or try and put any weight on my feet. It’s still really bad, so I better get my star of a hubby to take me to the Dr. So I haven’t done any exercise over the past week. Should I cut down on my portion sizes until My back’s better?. Re the IBS, I’ve completed & staarted my week 2 menu. I haven’t, out of habit, included anything that’ll upset the condition, but I will have a look at the ‘My Choices Option’ just to make sure, so once again, thank you for that.. I just really hope that I’ve lost a little more by the end of this 2nd wee. Would it be possible to add more information about fruits on the TDC site at all please. Cheers for all your help.

Hi, lamason. No, of course I don’t think you’re rude! I’m so sorry to read about your back. While you’re recovering, it would indeed be a good idea to cut back on portions, especially of starchy carbohydrates (try 1/2 the amount usually allotted to you). Try to get in protein and produce as much as your IBS will allow, and get in good sources of omega-3 fatty acids (flax seed, fatty fish, fortified eggs).
It may also help to ask your healthcare provider for some options for exercises that won’t aggravate your back. This may actually speed recovery, and set you back much less when you get going again.
