Hey Ossie, is there any v-8 juice that doesnt say “concentrated with added ingredients”?

Hi, turtlehurder. Not that I know of, sorry. The best alternative is to juice your own vegetables.

Thanks, you did say it was a sufficient supplement for veggies? Couple of other questions.
I have been drinking 8 oz’z room temperature water with one fresh squeezed lemon juice first thing every morning. I read this is good for you. Do you agree?
Also, I saw that pickles are a free food. Does this include sweet or bread and butter pickles?

Hi, turtlehurder. Fresh-squeezed juice can substitute for one or two of your daily servings of vegetables, but vegetable fiber is still important.
Yes, water with lemon juice first thing in the morning is indeed a good idea.
As for pickles, no, the sweet type is not free – though a small one doesn’t need to be counted (3 small ones or one large one already represent carb exchanges). As for the sour type, it is free in terms of carbs, but the high sodium content still means moderation is important.

Thanks Ossie. Question about dark chocolate, I read that 70% cocoa is a good choice. At 70% cocoa, how much and how often should I eat it? I found a hershey’s special dark chocolate that is delicious but it is only 45% cocoa. Would you advise me to stay away from that?

Hi, Turtlehurder. 45% is less desirable because it means there is more sugar – if you like it better than the 70%, go ahead and indulge in a little now and then, i.e. an ounce or two a day, especially if you “budget” for it. As for how much you “should” eat 70% cocoa, you can get the same benefit by adding pure cocoa powder to your milk with a non-sugar sweetener, or adding it to your cereal (if you eat it). In any event, if you use the Menu Planner to build your menus, you can select 70% chocolate or cocoa in the food lists, and the menus prepared for you will automatically place them.
