I’ve been eating really healthy lately but I’m worried about restaurants. What do I do when I go to restaurants? What if they don’t have a lean menu. Salads also can be dangerous with all the dressing and accouterments so what is the best salad to pick? What would I do if I wanted a burger, would I eat it or pass up on it to eat something healthier?

Hi, sjtrippy. It looks like you actually have the right idea. Focus on the healthy eating principles that guide good choices and portion control — even if it means just doing your best to eat a little less or a little better than you would have otherwise. Order regular vegetables salads, and try healthier dressings such as lemon juice, vinegar, and olive oil, and ask for it on the side so you can control the amount – 1 Tablespoon is best, 2 if it is a large, dry salad. And of course, avoid croutons (or at least avoid finishing them!). Common sense things like ignoring pre-meal fillers and high-sugar/alcohol drinks go without saying. Don’t be shy about asking the waiter what is in the foods, and for asking them to put heavy sauces on the side. Go for baked rather than friend items. If you want a burger, go for it – but just a regular burger with no added fats and fillers (and if they have a whole grain bun, so much the better). If you have a choice of where to go, try to find a place with pastured meats (these are especially common in larger cities such as Austin and Dallas/Ft. Worth. Also important to remember: if the portion sizes are large, split the meal with someone or divide it up and doggy bag the excess right away, to avoid temptation.
