Ingredients
- 4 tsp. / 20 ml olive oil
- 1 lb. / 450 g potatoes, grated
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Directions
- Using paper towels or cheesecloth, absorb moisture from the grated potatoes. Divide into 8 equal portions*.
- In a large non-stick pan, spray oil to lightly coat the bottom – up to 8 squirts – and place on a burner set to medium-high heat. When the pan is hot (but the oil is not smoking), place each portion of grated potatoes in the pan. Sprinkle some pepper and salt to taste, and cover.
- Every few minutes, lift up the edge of the mini hash cakes to check for doneness. Each side should take about 5 minutes. When the bottom is well-browned, lift out of the pan, lightly spray the bottom of the pan as done previously, flip the mini hash cakes, return to the pan, and continue cooking on the second side until also well-browned.
- Remove from the pan, and drain the excess oil on paper towels or a cheesecloth.
Serve hot.
*You can also fry the entire potato amount in one large cake, to be sliced when serving
Serving size: 2 mini pancakes or ¼ large pancake
Exchanges per Serving: 1 Carb, 0 Protein, 1 Fat
how much how are we supposed to eat for one person? the ingredients says it serves 4, we are only supposed to eat 1 serving correct?
Hi, Maya. Yes, you would generally have one serving, unless you can work more than one serving into your menu according to your exchanges (which you can view by clicking on “Exchange View” in the toolbar above your menu). These recipes are for more than one serving so that you can make them for the entire household, so that everyone isn’t eating something different. If you want to reduce the recipe size, try this reference: http://www.trimdownclub.com/reducing-the-size-of-recies.
How do we incorporate the recipes into the menu? I like the program so far, but have only had time to go over the menus. I’m excited to try them, but might like to vary them a little more.
Some of these recipes look PRETTY GOOD!
Hi, estaeheli. Many of our recipes can be added using the edit tool to the right of a menu item. For newer recipes that have not yet been added into the system, you can use them to substitute for the main ingredient in your meal. You can also match up the exchanges visible at the end of each recipe and when you click on “Exchange View” in the toolbar above your menu. It doesn’t need to be a perfect match to work.
Can I make an egg over easy and put on top of the hash brown patty
Hi, StanleyS. Sure! That’s a great breakfast.
This is so basic, I was expecting more like the ones I make which I called potato latkes, with grated onion, a clove or two of garlic and a little cheese to enhance the taste. Everyone loves these, hope this gives others ideas to spice things up if wanted!
Hi, aadE4. You don’t need to fry them – they can be baked, and come out crispy.
Hi, mmount227. Raw milk is not only allowed, it is encouraged if you can find a reliable producer (see our article here http://www.trimdownclub.com/all-about-raw-milk/). Where you see “pastured” or “farm-fresh” dairy , that’s where you can make the choice.
Maybe I missed it but is there raw Milk allowed with this plan,if not it should be!!!!
LOVE this hash browns. Tip, after grating potatoes rinse in colander and let them dry, they will not turn colors.
Hi, TwinyMann. Yes, these can be frozen. If you like milk, you can select it in the Menu Planner application to have it appear in your menus.
Freeze , cooked or uncooked?
Hi, freyashake. Either is fine.
can these be frozen and am I allowed milk
Can these be frozen?
Yes, these can be frozen.
Hi, aadE4. It looks like you would benefit most from using the full Menu Planner application (in “Apps” above), so that you can choose the foods that are best for you and avoid the ones that won’t. There is a video tutorial in the link, if you want.
I cannot eat anything with cranberries, onions, red tomatoes, soy, diary, some nuts, I have a very hard time finding balanced nutrition with lactose intolerance on top of IC… I hope you can help me.
Maybe I can try this, I just don’t like fried potatoes…
OK thank you for you do!!!! and I will try the potato hash brown crisps. keep on doing what your doing!!!!
Hi, KayeL. The recipe has been modified. Thanks for the input!
Have just read all the comments listed below….I found the quantity of oil TOO much for me…I did place on paper towels after they were cooked…the hash brown stuck to the paper towel after being refrigerated to be firm enough to wrap and place in the freezer…not happy with this recipe and will not make them again!!! Such a small serving size no wonder!
Hi, rmcmillen. We are working on adding exchange information per serving to our recipes. Not all of them, such as this, have notable amounts of protein, but this will be specified as well.
Regarding oils, if they are not super-heated for deep-fat-frying, they are fine. Light olive oil may be better than extra-virgin in this regard (but only in this regard).
You should give us the carbs/protein ratio in your recipes.
I agree
Now I have heard from nutritionists/docs that heating olive or canola oil makes it unhealthy and that coconut oil is better to use.?
I just joined today, and already have several questions!
I marked my diet for ‘low cholesterol’, but I cannot find how to get back to page for special needs or choices…where do I find that? I need to reduce my LDL, and I do not want to take a statin or medication of any kind to do this!
Also I did not see anywhere that addressed how much weight I would like to loose, or where I would like to maintain my weight. Is there anywhere that I am supposed to do that? If not, how do we know these menus will get us to that desired weight? (My goal weight is 150-155 lbs.)
The diet plan (menu) sent to me is marked ‘85% healthy’! Why is it not 100%? I have not adjusted the ‘plan’ other than ‘no pineapple’, due to allergy to it.
I would like a phone number to call with questions, rather than email only. Is that available?
Thank you for your help ~~ Susan
Hi, Susan, and welcome. To get back to the area in which you can select your special dietary meals, click on your name at the top of the site page. In the same area, you can enter your “goal” weight, and whether you want to lose or maintain your weight.
The reason the menu score is 85% at this stage is to enable you to ease into what may be a new way of eating for you. If you want to get closer to 100%, you can use the fully personal version of the Menu Planner application, wherein you can select the healthiest foods (in the lightest blue shade in the food lists) – you can get to this area by clicking on the “My Food Choices” icon (an apple) in the toolbar above your menu.
At this time, we don’t have the option for telephone support, but I am happy to continue to answer any questions you have here. Note that doing it in a forum enables other Clubmembers to learn from responses to your great questions.
I just joined today and am very surprised to see this recipe. I of course need to grocery shop before I can even begin but I pray this works.
Mini-Latkes!!! Just might have to make these year-round!
To all asking about portions:
Serving Size: 1 mini hash cake or 1/8 large hash cake
Hi, lucita. Yes, most of the recipes can indeed be frozen, and that is a great idea.
Hi, 4ron – absolutely!
Sounds good, can about 3 green onions be added to the potatoes ??
Made these for breakfast w onion and mild hot peppers had soft boil egg with it. Very delicious and enough for other meals or snacks
These are wonderful . I just put the leftovers in a zip-lock and when I get to have them again I put them in the toater oven! Delish!!
can you make ahead of time and freeze until you want them
So can you use this as one part of your snack? How much am I meant to eat??
How long before the entire nutritional information is available? Seems to me, that this would have been key info for this diet. Thanks.
Looks so Good,I have a really busy schedule at work ,wake up so early leave the place late , I want to start preparing food from this awesome website, can I freeze most of the recipes? Thanks.
Can you freeze these? We drive a semi, and need to be able to prepare food ahead of time that we can freeze and reheat.
These sound yummy, I just don’t know if I could stop at one cake!
A serving size is one mini hash cake, yielding about 10 g carbohydrates, just over a gram of protein, and 6-1/2 grams of fat.
A really dumb question maybe, but i am used to the food delivery diets, so if i was to eat these, how many slices would i eat?
Hi, SummerMarkie. Nutritional analyses for recipes are in the works.
Good afternoon all,
Do any of these recipies show the full nutrional breakdown?
How many carbs, sodium, fibre, protein perserving.
Hi, Marcil70. Eggs are not actually part of the traditional recipe. Eggs are frequently eaten along side hash browns.
why no eggs?
I add a tablespoon of lemon juice to the potatoes to keep them from turning black.
Hi, SlimMoe. The natural starch in the potatoes holds it together – you have to see it to believe it.
Hi, Jmansfield. If you add an egg to this, please do select a good egg such as omega-3 or grass-fed, to make sure the fats are better for you. Note also that this adds a protein and a fat exchange; to make it even, try using a nonstick pan and cutting back on the fat a little.
I am reading the recipes here because I am the cook and my husband needs the weight lose. Can you use the shredded potoatoes by Ore Ida? We have just joined today and the recipes seem to include items, ie..organic milk, oat flour, that must be expensive and used not too often..what is the shelf life of these more unusual items and how often are they really used. He needs to loose the weight and is 72 years young, are there any men out there in this age bracket and if so how are you doing with the diet? Thank you so much. I am looking forward to seeing results.
Sounds like Rosti to me!! Weird questions below and of course you can have a poached egg, bacon, sausage, grilled tomato or whatever you like to make a breakfast. This is a diet club though, so maybe not the bacon or sausage…very yummy though.
I love making my hash brown crisps with sweet potatoes. You have to lower the temp so they don’t burn. I add a touch of cinnamon to the potatoes.
In a non-stick pan you can cut the oil in half and as the potatoes absorb the oil, not add more to do the second side. A bit of grated onion and/or garlic would give them more flavor.
to klynn72664 i would just cut the recipe in half and if needed, half again. or you could freeze the potato hash brown crisps and then thaw them out and put them in a toaster oven or regular oven to crisp up again.
Goodness….I live alone and need to cook for one. I have a hard time cutting these recipes to suit one serving. I don’t imagine leftovers would keep too well…..Anyone have any ideas?
I also add eggs and onions to this.
Could I have one egg with this?
Delicious. And my kids loved them
ps what would you put with it to make a complete breakfast new at this but hope to get into it thank
sounds great would you count this as 1 carb 1 fat pleasr help
This sounds good but what’s holding it together to create a cake?
I don’t like the use of so much olive oil.
sounds good, I will try it.
Make sure you have the perfect pan or you will end up with soggy, gross, not golden brown, hash browns. Not doing this again til I get new cookware!
Hi everyone, I just made this and i love them i did not use as much oil as called for and my hubby had to eat some of the hash browns because I do not know how to store cut potatoes with out them turning black. I DO HAVE A QUEStion: What type of potato should we use today I used a russette and a white potato. NEXT time i make these I will only grate 1/4 lbs enough for just one porstion.
Can I substitute sweet potatoes? Would that change the cooking and prep instructions?
The 4 Tbsp. oil is for 4-8 servings, meaning 1/2-1 Tbsp. per serving. To further reduce the amount, after cooking you can transfer the hash browns to paper towels to soak up any excess oil before serving.
I did use as much olive oil.
they was good !
shaneeog,
I found that when you push print for the recipe a box will appear and there are options on the left for how many pages. check the box beside the word pages and it will print only the recipe.
Just remembered I wanted to add that I placed the rinsed grated potatoes in a clean tea towel and then squeezed the moisture out. I then re-weighed my allotted amount of potato.
Thanks for the rinsing tip Lore, it worked brilliantly. This is my first trim breakfast and you helped to make it delicious! I could not believe how much starch came out. I had to have two servings and my husband was disappointed there was not a lot more for him to have!!! My husband came up with my username to inspire me! I am definitely not a little lady but look forward to the day I can look in the mirror and see a little lady looking back at me, the way I was when we got married 19 years ago!
how do I print out the recipes without all the comments coming with it???
hmmm, might be a good idea to put the grated potatoes into water to get rid of the starch before cooking them otherwise the potatoes tend to get very gooey. In the restaurant I worked at we used to blanch the grated potatoes first so they would cook faster.
4 Tbsps oil for each serving? What is the fat and calorie count of this recipe?
sounds good but all that oil makes me nervous. I usually avoid anything fried.
